Dear XXXXXXX, Thank you for taking the time to write me. As
your Senator in Washington, I always want to understand the
views of my constituents, especially on issues as important as public
health and national sovereignty. You take these issues seriously and
I do as well. Let me state my
position on the matter clearly: I vehemently oppose all efforts to
subvert our national sovereignty and outsource important government powers to
foreign international bodies. The World Health
Organization (WHO) was profoundly unhelpful at the start of the COVID-19
pandemic. As the final scope of the pandemic attests, the WHO failed in its
primary mission to prevent or slow the spread of this new and dangerous
disease. Worse yet, this failure was exacerbated when China successfully
lobbied WHO to prevent the release of information about the coronavirus to
the rest of the world. This double failure has convinced me that the WHO
cannot be trusted to manage global disease outbreaks. As you know, the WHO
is currently considering a new treaty that will change the way it addresses
pandemics. One such proposed change would empower the WHO to independently
declare that a pandemic is emerging in a country without first getting that
government’s permission. This provision appears to be a direct response to
China’s hiding of the coronavirus pandemic during its initial days. Other
parts of the new treaty would create a global vaccine supply for “equitable”
distribution and ask signatories to combat pandemic misinformation. I am not
convinced that this treaty and its new provisions would improve the lives of
Americans in any way. It is an honor to
serve you in the United States Senate. As your senator, I take my
constitutional responsibilities seriously. One of my responsibilities is to
examine new treaties to determine if they are in America’s best interest and
vote on them accordingly. Please know that I will jealously guard this
constitutional responsibility and insist that the Senate review all international
treaties proposed by the president before such treaties become binding. Thank you for your
message and your interest in this important issue. Sincerely,
JD
Vance United
States Senator for Ohio
