There are always some really bad films out in distribution, but once in awhile there is a truly awful film. That is the only description you could give to the new film, "Antichrist." Recently I had Ted Baehr on my radio program to warn our listeners about it and to encourage them to sign a petition he has put together making sure it received an NC-17rating.
The movie essentially stars only two people, Willem Dafoe and Charlotte Gainsbourg. You might remember that Dafoe played the role of Jesus in the blasphemous film "The Last Temptation of Christ." So even before you know much about the film, you can imagine that it probably isn't a movie for the whole family.
Ted Baehr says it is worse than you could imagine. He says that it is "the most horrific movie ever seen." That's incredibly strong language from a man who has watched films that I wouldn't walk across the street to see.
OK, so I think I have convinced you not to see the movie. But Ted Baehr encourages us to take some action. He is petitioning the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) to give this awful movie the rating it deserves: NC-17. He says this rating will keep it out of many of your neighborhood cinemas. An R-rating will allow it into local theaters. He also fears it will not even receive a rating, meaning that theoretically any age child could see it.
I couldn't imagine that the MPAA would not rate it as NC-17, especially after just watching the trailer. People have walked out of this movie at film festivals because it is so objectionable. But Ted Baehr pointed out that the MPAA is not a watchdog group, but rather is owned by the six major entertainment studios and needs to be held accountable for its actions. So that's why he is encouraging Christians to take action.
I don't want to give this movie too much publicity, because people might be inclined to see it. But I don't think we should sit back and ignore it either. Giving it the rating it deserves seems like the right course. I'm Kerby Anderson, and that's my point of view
