TIred of sitting around wishing something in your house would break so that fixing it would give you something to do? I got this announcement from a travel website we had used for a trip to Cancun about 6 years ago. I thought I’d share it with you in case a trip to a warmer climate sounds appealing. I think we’re going to make reservations for early March. The rates are fantastic.

Tired of being cooped up at home wondering when you’ll finally fall victim to the pandemic? Tired of eating carryout foods, home cooked freezer burned meals, and leftovers of unknown origin in plastic containers? Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, all tropical destinations temporarily banned international visitors, but many are now reopening and are desperately attempting to attract tourists.

Mexico, racked by the Coronavirus, a dengue fever outbreak, unemployment, human trafficking, the drug trade, and horrifying cartel violence is still one of our most popular all-inclusive destinations, recently reopened for business in June. Note that the U.S. State Department has not yet lifted its health advisory for Mexican travel but rates may never be this low again.

This week, I'll highlight a few of our top-selling all-inclusive resorts in Mexico that are open now. The upfront rate at each property includes meals, snacks, locally concocted alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages, entertainment, and nonmotorized water sports.

These resorts are located on the Yucatan Peninsula, adjacent to a dense tropical jungle teaming with dangerous reptiles, stinging insects, an inexhaustible variety of venomous snakes, and a few native tribes that continue to practice cannibalism. Excursions into this area are neither included nor recommended but are available upon request for a nominal fee.

Pit Viper Riviera Paradise (5 stars), Playa del Carmen -- This sprawling resort features a Mediterranean-inspired design and five pools, 10 restaurants and cafes, about a dozen bars, a bowling alley and an on-site diving center. Certain suites have rooftop terraces with private Jacuzzis and loungers. ($95/night)

Continental Xcaret Resort (4.5 stars), Playa del Carmen -- A private cove, seven swimming pools and recreational offerings like tennis, miniature golf and windsurfing are featured at this property. The staff can arrange excursions to nearby Xcaret eco-park, where you can snorkel through ancient caves and underground rivers, purchase illegal substances, or swim with dolphins and box jellyfish. ($80/night)

Hotel Riu Habla Peninsula (3 stars), Cancun -- This recently refurbished resort is edged on both sides by white-sand beaches and turquoise water. Four swimming pools, a spa, gym, kids club and several dining options round out the on-site amenities. The Villas accommodations are designated as kids-free; guests in this enclave have access to an exclusive restaurant and pool. It is recommended here that you do not venture off the resort property due to a recent rash of kidnappings for ransom. ($60/night)

Paraiso Loco Lindo (1 star), Playa del Carmen -- For our budget minded travelers, this resort features a self service Mexican Cantina type restaurant, three bars, a lazy river, wave pool, a mosquito lagoon, and three natural watering holes at the edge of the jungle. Room service is not an option but the rooms do include electricity, an alarm clock, running water, deadbolt locks, and ceiling fans. A peso operated laundromat is only a taxi ride from your room. Children can play in the kids club and splash park and enjoy donkeys painted like zebras while parents relax in beach hammocks, negotiate with panhandlers on the beach, wade in the murky tide pools, or look forward to their departure date. ($45/week ...three week minimum)
