Regardless of the actual cause of the crash, this event is highly destabilizing, especially given the current tensions between Iran and Israel. This event threatens to spark a rapid escalation of events that could pull the U.S. and Russia into a regional conflict.

A helicopter carrying Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and foreign minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian has crashed. His aircraft made what's been described as a hard landing outside city of Jolfa, near the village of Uzi, on the Iranian-Azerbaijani border. Rescuers have struggled to reach the aircraft in the mountainous area, with the extremely foggy weather making it harder. Several top-ranking officials were also on board. Daniel Padwick reports.

Raisi’s Chopper Crashed   Search Op Underway After Chopper Carrying Iran President Crashes At least 40 rescue teams, including drones and search dogs, have been deployed after a helicopter carrying Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian suffered a “hard landing” in Iran’s East Azerbaijan province. However, harsh weather and heavy fog in the area were making it difficult for them to reach the site, state media said. The officials were returning from the border with the country of Azerbaijan — in the northwest of the country, some 375 miles from the capital of Tehran — where Raisi was inaugurating a dam on the Aras river with Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev.
