'Narrow escape...': Zelensky on Russian shelling near Europe's
largest nuclear plant in Ukraine, photo above
Ukraine's president Volodymyr Zelensky said
that the world 'narrowly escaped' a radiation disaster when electricity to
Europe's largest nuclear power plant was cut for hours. Urging international
bodies to act fast to force Russian troops to vacate the site, Zelensky said
Russian shelling on Thursday had sparked fires in the ash pits of a nearby coal
power station which led Zaporizhzhia plant to be cut off from the power grid.
Zelensky said Ukrainian technicians used back-up diesel generators to ensure
power supply to cool the nuclear reactors. Russian officials have however
blamed Ukraine for the power cut.

1.37 new troops to its Army, photo below.
Vladimir Putin has signed a decree to increase
the size of Russia’s armed forces to 2.04 million, as the war in Ukraine enters
its seventh month. Associated Press reported that the Russian president’s order
comes as the country has suffered heavy losses during its occupation in
Ukraine. The order will come into effect on 1st January 2023 and includes a
137,000 rise in the number of combat personnel. It is significant increase in
army personnel as the war drags on. Announcing the decision, Kremlin did not
explain the motive behind the increase or where the new recruits would come
from. As per reports, Putin's latest move signals that Russia is in no mood to retreat
from Ukraine any time soon.

U.S wants Modi Govt to support Russian oil price cap. But India
has a condition, says report
As per Bloomberg report, India is hesitant to
join the U.S-led west's plan to cap the price of Russian oil unless a consensus
is reached with all buyers. India which has emerged as one of the biggest
buyers of Russian oil since the invasion of Ukraine, will seek broader
consensus before it supports U.S-led efforts. That message will likely be
conveyed to U.S Deputy Treasury Secretary Wally Adeyemo and his team at
meetings with Indian government officials. According to Bloomberg, Indian
policymakers fear that committing to the price cap will disrupt its access to
discounted Russian crude. Watch this video for more details

Russia burning off large amounts of natural gas as Europe's
energy costs skyrocket:
Russia is reportedly burning off large
amounts of natural gas, even as shortages send prices soaring across Europe.
That's according to an analysis shared with BBC News. Experts said the burnt
gas would have previously been exported to Germany. Since June, researchers
have noted a significant increase in heat emanating from the facility. They
said the plant is burning an estimated $10 million worth of gas every day.
Others have suggested that more than four million cubic metres of gas are being
burned by the flare every day.
