In 2020, many Americans have experienced significantly higher
levels of violence. Gun violence and gun crime has, in particular, rose
drastically, with over 19,000 people
killed in shootings and firearm-related
incidents in 2020. That’s the highest death toll in over 20 years, according
to data from the Gun Violence Archive (GVA), an online site that collects gun
violence data, and the Britannia Group’s non-partisan site procon.org.
This total includes victims of homicides and unintentional
deaths but does not include gun suicides. And despite there being no
“large-scale” shootings in 2020, the number of mass shootings—which are
classified as an incident in which four or more people are shot and injured or
killed—has actually risen, drastically, to over 600, the most in the past 5
years and a nearly 50% increase in 2019’s total.
Homicides increased by 36% across 28 major U.S.
cities—including Los Angeles, Atlanta, Detroit and Philadelphia—between June
and October 2020, when compared to the same time period last year.
In Chicago, 3,237
shooting incidents have occurred as of Dec. 27, an increase of over 50% from the 2,120
incidents reported in the same time frame in 2019. The city also saw a 55%
increase in homicides. New York City has had 1,824 shooting victims this year
as of Dec. 20, compared to 896 in the same time period last year, and a 39%
increase in homicides year on
year—the New York Times reporting
that 2020 has been the city’s deadliest in “nearly a decade.” (Local news
reports out of Philadelphia and Charlotte, N.C.,
meanwhile, confirm that the cities have each seen the most homicides this year
since the 1990s.)
In Minneapolis, where Floyd was killed, there has been a 77% increase in
murders.

Mysuru: Two women arrested for child trafficking
Mysuru: The police
busted a child trafficking racket in the district. About three months ago a
child selling incident came to light in Nanjanagudu. SP R Chetan formed a
special police team to investigate the case under the leadership of police
additional superintendent R Shivakumar. The team nabbed B C Saraswathi(62) and
her daughter R Lakshmi(34) on charges of selling children. Speaking to media
persons here on Wednesday R Chetan said that the accused sold a child of one
Jyothi from Bangalore to Yeshodha, a native of Holenarasipur in Hassan
district. In another case, the accused sold a male child belonging to Manjula
in Mysuru to Chaitra, a resident of Kollegala in Chamarajanagara district. It
is said that the accused was targeting poor pregnant women to sell their
children. The accused would find a buyer and create documents with the
connivance of thd hospital staff in the name of the buyers. Then they would
sell children for higher price. SP Chetan said the accused was indulging in the
trade for months. Police are investigating further to find out whether they
were involved in more number of cases. The two rescued children were handed
over to Bapuji Child Care Centre in the city. The accused were booked under
various sections of IPC.

Conservative for U.S. Senate is increasing his already overwhelming lead
in the race for Ohio’s Republican U.S. Senate nomination. The poll,
released by an independent group, shows that Mandel leads J.D. Vance by 28
points and confirms that Jane Timken has dropped into a distant third place
with only 8% of Ohio Republicans supporting her candidacy.

Timken has been dropping in the polls after defending the vote to impeach
President Trump and after getting booed at the recent Trump rally in Ohio.

Target Ethiopia Regime's Critics in US

He needed to get out
of the house and clear his head after several stressful weeks following his
outspoken resignation as
Ethiopia’s number two diplomat in the U.S.
So in mid-May, Berhane Kidanemariam took a stroll around his
quiet neighborhood in Bethesda, Md., a leafy but bustling suburb
bordering on Washington, D.C.
A car crept up
alongside him on the sidewalk. A dark window slid down. One of the men inside,
an Ethiopian he vaguely recognized, hailed him with an insulting epithet. Then,
with a sinister smile, the man offered him “a ride.” Kidanemariam, 60,
kept walking, ignoring the car until it finally gunned away. He wondered how
the men knew where he’d be walking.
Another incident
happened on June 16, Kidanemariam recalled in an exclusive interview with SpyTalk. It was at a
Starbucks on Rockville Pike in Bethesda. He was sitting on the patio enjoying a
coffee.
“Two men who I don’t
know approached me in a peaceful way,” he says. They exchanged friendly
greetings in Amharic. But then the faces of the men suddenly “turned into
monsters. They started to harass me, calling me a traitor, saying I was a paid
spy, etcetera.” Again, he ignored them until they went away.
“It was sad,” he
says. Since he resigned publicly in March, saying he was “filled with despair and anguish” over
Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s “genocidal war in Tigray” and brutal crushing of
dissent, including “the assassination of journalists,” Kidanemariam has had to
endure bouts of harassing telephone calls, emails and denunciations in Ethiopia’s
state-controlled media. He no longer goes for walks. The elegant
erstwhile diplomat, once a star in a regime that promised peace and wide
reforms—Abiy was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize only two years ago—is now worried for
the safety of his wife and three children.
“A
friend advised me to be very careful," he says. "They have gangsters
in the local community.”
He’s not alone in
his worries. Other critics of the regime here tell SpyTalk they’ve
been harassed and threatened.
“Well,
we didn't get threats from the embassy, in an official capacity—they wouldn’t
do it like that,” says Meaza Gidey, a leading outspoken critic of the regime.“
At a protest demonstration in Los Angeles last April, a “government supporter
pulled a gun on me,” she told SpyTalk. Another
protester posted a photo of the alleged incident on Twitter. She
says she reported it to the LAPD and a court case is pending.
“I also get a lot of
online threats and harassment, but it doesn't come directly from the embassy
here,” she says.
The Ethiopian
embassy in Washington did not respond to questions about whether it was
responsible for, or had abetted, threats against critics.
But one Tigray
critic has felt the full force of the regime’s campaign against him for his
activism.
Extraodinary Rendition?
Michael Berhe, 48,
came to America for surgery in 1991 but stayed when it became clear he was at
risk of being conscripted into the then-military regime’s army if he went home,
he told SpyTalk.
Eventually he found work as a medical interpreter for a hospital in Boston. And
last year he became an outspoken critic of the current regime over its brutal
suppression of Tigray rebels, even going so far as appearing in a theatrical
video on YouTube produced by Tigrayan activists that reenacted a November 2020
massacre carried out by Eritrean troops allied with the regime in Axum, in
which he played a priest. Then, in February, Amnesty International
published a report documenting
that “hundreds” of civilians had been killed in Axum via indiscriminate
shelling and executions by both Eritrean and Ethiopian
troops.
The regime pounced.
It called the Amnesty report “fake news” and falsely accused it of relying on
Berhe’s video for its report. Amnesty quickly fired back that it had had
no contact whatsoever with Berhe or in any way used his video, which had been
clearly labelled a theatrical reenactment, as research.
But then the regime
took a more sinister step, evidently targeting Berhe for
capture. According to internal regime documents, first obtained by
Ethiopian journalist Zecharias Zelalem for Canada’s Globe & Mail newspaper,
a foreign ministry official by the name of Yanit Abera Habtemariam
recommended that Berhe “be prosecuted for crimes against the state, so he could
be deported from the United States to Ethiopia.” In another, March 17 document,
a foreign ministry official responsible for North America, Gebeyehu Ganga,
asked the regime’s Washington, D.C. embassy to see whether U.S. authorities
could be induced to “hand over” Berhe for extradition or, failing that, have
him “tried in an American court.”
The embassy did not
respond to a request for verification of the documents, which SpyTalk obtained
independently, or whether it had indeed made any efforts to persuade the U.S.
to hand over Berhe. The State Department did not immediatey respond to
questions on whether it had communicated with the regime about Berhe or the
other reported threats.
In an interview
Wednesday, Berhe said he did not know what steps the embassy may have taken to
have him arrested or extradited, but said he’s been subjected to a “global
effort” by the regime and its supporters to discredit him as a “mock
priest.” He also said regime advocates had made threatening calls and
sent ”petitions” to a Boston church frequented by Ethiopian exiles, and where
he does volunteer work, to “complain about me,” as well as to the hospital
where he works, “pretty much demanding that I should be fired from work and
that kind of thing.”
“Most
of the petitioners are from other states, even from other countries, only a
few from around here,” he said.
The regime has taken
to social media to beat back its critics, using techniques similar to those
launched by Moscow in the U.S. during the 2016 election campaign and beyond. As
as evidence of military atrocities in Tigray mounted, fake Twitter accounts
with fake photographs under such names as “George Bolton” and “John Max,” who
supposedly were “scholars, diplomats, journalists or other experts,” according
to the Globe &
Mail, popped up to rebut the accounts.
“Disinformation has
been a key element of the government’s communications strategy,” the newspaper
reported. According to a knowledgeable Ethiopian source, the regime’s
ambassador to Washington, Fitsum Arega, has been paying at least one
freelance American journalist and author to write pieces lambasting what he has
called a vast global propaganda campaign that has “duped” the U.S., the U.N.
and E.U. into taking Tigray’s side against Ethiopia.
“He was paid every
month,” said the source, who says he overheard conversations about the
arrangement. “The ambassador paid him by cash.”
Contacted by SpyTalk Tuesday
evening, the writer at first refused to flatly deny the allegation and instead
heatedly demanded to see the evidence against him. Eventually he did deny
taking payments from the embassy. SpyTalk had
no intention of identifying him in print without further evidence of the
alleged payments, but later that night he outed himself on Twitter and
railed against being asked questions about it.
“I do not work nor
have I ever worked for the Ethiopian gov't,” wrote Jeff Pearce, a
Canadian-based author of books and monographs on
Ethiopia. “And...you'll find I actually blasted a gov't media outlet when it
chose to ‘freely re-interpret’ one of my articles.” But Pearce added that he
would “gladly take their money. I'll still write what I want, but I'm happy to
take their money.”
‘Dehumanizing Rhetoric’
During a brief visit
to Addis Ababa on Wednesday, the head of the U.S. Agency for International
Development, Samantha Power, expressed concern about the “dehumanizing
rhetoric” used by Ethiopian leaders against the Tigray rebels, whom Prime
Minister Abiy Ahmed has called “weeds" and “cancer.” Power pressed
the government “to ease a blockade of humanitarian aid to Tigray,” Reuters reported,
“where hundreds of thousands of people face famine in the world’s worst hunger
crisis in a decade.” The regime and its supporters blame Tigray for blocking
the aid.
The day before her
arrival, a regime supporter took to Twitter to denounce Power as “a
goddess of bringer of war to Ethiopia.”
Back in Bethesda,
Berhane Kidanemariam was watching events unfold with anguish and
horror. But the former diplomat can’t go for walks to clear his head
anymore.
“It’s just too
dangerous,” he says, even in one of the safest towns in America.
