David H. Berger on Monday rebuked Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin’s edict
requiring all Armed Forces personnel to submit to Covid-19 vaccinations under
threat of court martial or discharge, said a source in Gen. Berger’s office who
overheard a heated conversation between them.
Gen. Berger
telephoned the defense secretary minutes after he said in a press conference
that the Covid-19 vaccination is needed to maintain military readiness and that
he would enforce the mandatary vaccination policy regardless of FDA approval
status.
“There will be no
mandatory vaccinations for my Marines,” Gen. Berger said.
In a transcript of
the call reviewed by Real Raw News, Gen. Berger lambasted Austin and branded
him a traitor.
“Under no
circumstances will Marines be compelled to take a potentially hazardous
vaccination that the FDA won’t even fully endorse,” Gen. Berger told Austin.
“You are a coward and a traitor, manipulated by people pushing bad policy on
the men and women who provide security to our nation. Neither you nor your
puppet president has authority to enforce such a policy.”
Austin argued that
mandatory vaccinations have always been a requirement for soldiers enlisting
into the Armed Forces, and they, as property of the U.S. government, have no
right to decide whether to take the Covid-19 jab. The federal government and
President Biden would decide for them, Austin said.
“They’re incapable
of making informed decisions. So we, their leaders, make the big decisions they
cannot,” Austin said. “Biden and Harris are in charge, not individual
soldiers.”
Then Austin got
political: “If conservatives and evangelicals see our fighting forces getting
vaccinated, they’ll be more likely to get vaccinated themselves,” Austin said.
Gen. Berger said it
was unfair to compare established vaccinations with a product that was rushed
to market with little concern for side effects. He called the CDC and Dr. Fauci
corrupt, and he asked Austin why the puppet administration hid from the public
an NIH report linking the vaccination to thousands of fatalities.
“If someone dies,
you say it was Covid-19. There’s a refusal to admit the vaccination carries
side effects that can include death in certain individuals.”
“I’m not a
physician. I’m the Secretary of Defense for Joseph R. Biden, and I follow
orders,” Austin retorted.
“In case you haven’t
heard, Biden’s not in charge of the military, and neither are you. You can sell
whatever lies you want to the media. You sold your soul, Lloyd, and I hope you
can live with yourself,” Gen. Berger said.
Gen. Berger said he
had the support of other Joint Chiefs of Staff and would implore them to ignore
unlawful orders coming from the illegitimate administration.
“If a soldier wants
the vaccination, fine. If not, he’s not rolling up his sleeve. If you try to
forcibly vaccinate even one of my Marines, you better come armed,” Gen. Berger
said, and hung up the phone.
In a statement
Monday afternoon, Biden said he strongly supports Austin’s message and that he
is “eager to see” the Covid-19 vaccination added to the battery of vaccinations
soldiers receive upon joining the military.

With
thousands of Afghans fleeing the Taliban and the U.S. embassy under evacuation
orders, ghosts of disasters past have reared their ugly heads.
Is
it Saigon all over again, with its iconic, desperate helicopter rescues as
North Vietnamese troops overran the city? Or is it Cambodia, where the U.S.
ambassador fled with some 200 other Americans just five days before Phnom Penh
fell to the murderous Khmer Rouge? Further, will the Taliban turn out to be
more like the Vietnamese communists, who settled scores with their enemy
without mass executions, or the fanatical Khmer Rouge, who emptied Phnom Penh
and embarked on a genocidal purge that murdered or starved to death somewhere
between 1.3 and 3 million people?
A
little of both, maybe, longtime observers say. But the story there is far from
over, despite dire signs of an imminent collapse.
“The comparisons to
Vietnam are more reminiscent of the chaotic U.S. withdrawal after a seemingly
endless U.S. military engagement,” Thomas Lum, a longtime Asia expert at the
Congressional Research Service, said in an email. “But the comparison to
Cambodia may lead us to think about what might replace the U.S.-backed
government” in Kabul.
“The Vietnamese
communists were relatively pragmatic—they punished their political enemies,
but mostly stopped
there (they didn’t aim to totally change the way people
think); the Khmer Rouge were fanatical, possessed by an extreme form of Maoist
anti-intellectualism,” he said. The Taliban, “is religiously extreme.”
(Lum emphasized he was speaking for himself, not the CRS.)
The U.S. embassy in
Kabul said Thursday it
was "hearing additional reports of Taliban executions of surrendering
Afghan troops" that were "deeply disturbing and could constitute war
crimes." The Taliban has detained "several members of the Afghan
government, including both civilian leaders and officers of the Afghan National
Defense and Security Forces...in several locations,"it said. Human Rights Watch reported
in late July that Taliban forces in Kandahar Province had “detained hundreds of
residents whom they accuse of association with the government.” Taliban
fighters were going door to door to track down provincial government officials,
members of the police and army and their relatives and shooting some on the
spot, HRW said.
Fears are that
Taliban death squads, which have been targeting interpreters that
worked with U.S. and NATO forces, will engage in random or even mass executions
in Kabul, should they take it as widely expected. This week a U.S.
official told ABC News that
an internal military analysis predicted the city could be isolated in 30 to 60
days and be captured in 90 days.
The East is Read
Acclaimed journalist
and author Elizabeth Becker, who
covered the war in Cambodia intensely for The Washington Post, says the Taliban
remind her more of the Khmer Rouge than the Vietnamese communists, ”in their
total disregard for human rights. Throwing the population out of the cities and
towns into the countryside is on par with some of the worst of Taliban.”
But that’s where the
comparison ends, she adds. “The Taliban has long experience governing, however
medieval and horrific their governing style. The Khmer Rouge had close to none
and were shooting from the hip, figuratively as well as literally.”
She added,
“Underlying the murderous regime was a stunning incompetence stemming from the
KR ideology that only peasants, especially uneducated peasants, should lead the
revolution. Hence the elimination—by execution or slow starvation—of the
professional and educated classes, doctors, teachers, journalists, bureaucrats,
etc. Once the peasants were in charge they often did not know what they were
doing. The crops failed, the health system crumbled, and paranoia exploded
leading to the nightmare of the regime with its killing fields.”
In contrast, “The
Vietnamese communists had been running North Vietnam since 1954 and had no bias
against educated, professionals, etc.,” Becker, author, most recently, of You Don't Belong Here: How Three
Women Rewrote the Story of War, told SpyTalk. “They knew
what they were doing and acted like a real government”—notwithstanding their
communist “reeducation camps” and disastrous Marxist-style mismanagement of the
economy for over a decade.
Thomas
Johnson, who’s been visiting and writing about Afghanistan for about 30 years,
called the media’s search for Afghan metaphors in Vietnam and Cambodia is
“ridiculous. People are looking for simplistic answers to an extremely
complex and nuanced situation.”
“The Talibs” (Arabic
for “knowledge seekers”) have been around for centuries, wandering the
countryside as ascetics and preaching “the true path to Allah,” much like
ancient evangelical Christians, said Johnson, author of Taliban Narratives: The Use and
Power of Stories in the Afghanistan Conflict. The
current Taliban force, with its military and political components, emerged via
the U.S.-backed Sunni insurgency against Soviet forces in Afghanistan in the
1980s. Today, Johnson says, it has “30 to 40 per cent” of the population on its
side (more than twice what Mao Zedong said was necessary for an insurgency to
succeed) and controls 17 of the 34 provincial capitals. The Khmer Rouge,
he says, were more like terrorists than a revolutionary insurgency.
It’s possible
Taliban commanders will also carry out mass reprisals, said Johnson, a research
professor at the Naval Postgraduate School in
Monterey, Calif.. But he doubts such would be authorized by the
Taliban’s Quetta shura, or
consultative council.
“Now I'm not
suggesting that the Taliban would not pursue acts of terror, but they're not a
terrorist group. At least not the way I define terrorism,” Johnson said.
“The
old guys” in the shura ”are very conservative compared to some of the radical
new commanders,” especially those who were imprisoned (and released under a deal U.S. Afghan
envoy Zalmay Khalilzad made with the Taliban during “peace talks” in
Qatar).
“They’re the people
I don’t doubt could commit atrocities,” Johnson told SpyTalk. “The older
Taliban do not want to do that, they really don’t.” They’ll seek to impose
harsh sharia law and reestablish the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, he said,
“but they also desperately want international recognition. That’s why they
played along with this political theater called peace negotiations.”
Saigon Nightmares
Where the
comparisons to Saigon and Phnom Penh do seem apt is the rising panic in Kabul,
and not just among Afghans.
“The situation at
the US Embassy in Kabul is more
dire than what the State Department is saying,” NPR’s Tom Bowman tweeted on Friday
afternoon. “Mail has stopped. Nearly all employees are packing up and a very
small number will head to another location. Staff are gearing up to destroy
sensitive papers, computers, phones.”
The Pentagon is
dispatching 3,000 troops to aid in the evacuation. The question is whether they
will be flying into an ongoing catastrophe.
“The problems in
Afghanistan are bringing into focus issues that I had to live with for more
than 40 years ago in Vietnam,” former CIA officer Frank Snepp said in a SpyTalk podcast interview last
month. The emerging chaos feels the same, but the situation is different in at
least one key respect, said Snepp, who authored a lacerating 1978 memoir about
the frenzied end to the U.S. war in Vietnam, Decent Interval: An Insider's
Account of Saigon's Indecent End Told by the CIA's Chief Strategy Analyst in
Vietnam: Senior U.S. officials had fallen for a
communist psychological wafare ruse that there would be a peaceful transfer of
power, so they refused to authorize an orderly evacuation of South Vietnamese
who has worked with us, much less embassy staff. (Reports from spy Snepp
had inside the North Vietnamese command saying the communists were going for a
military rout were dismissed.)
However
belated and haphazard, the U.S. has at least has an exit plan for Afghanistan,
with a date certain for its completion, Sept. 11. “We didn't have that,” Snepp
said. “So the delay and the failure to prepare [in advance] for an evacuation
is unforgivable all the more in Afghanistan.”
There’s another
reason for some optimism about the fate of Afghans who worked with us, as
opposed to our Vietnamese in 1975, Snepp said: Tribal loyalties could
blunt individual Taliban commanders’ bloodlust for vengeance
“The individual tribes,
the Pashtuns and so forth, will protect their own, even if they did deal with
the Americans,” he thinks. “We didn't have that in Vietnam. There were no such
constituencies, indigenous constituencies, that could protect those we might
leave behind. So it was a horrible situation. And the only consolation
vis-a-vis Afghanistan is that those tribal networks could provide some shield
for them.”
At least the Taliban
doesn’t have warplanes to bomb Kabul’s airports, as the North Vietnamese did in
the final days of Saigon’s collapse. Or a regimented infantry and tank force to
invade the capital and crush all resistance.
“This is pretty
bloodless” compared to Vietnam, says Jason Amerine, who commanded one of the
first Green Beret units to enter Afghanistan in October 2001 and organize the
rout of the Taliban. “This isn’t the NVA.” As for atrocities, they’ll come
“after the capitulation” of Afghan units, he says. “They surrender, then are
shot.”
Forever War
The end is near. But the
U.S. apparently plans to fight on, at least from the air, with warplanes,
drones and maybe cruise missiles. The CIA and special operations units are
almost certainly busy organizing stay-behind agent nets.
“I think in post-war post
Afghanistan, you're going to have a very active enemy elimination
program—however distasteful it is to talk about,” says Snepp, “but it's going
to be far more effective than anything that we could have contemplated in
Vietnam.”
The last U.S. troops and
civilians in Vietnam were so chaotically evacuated, leaving tons of
incriminating files behind, that continuing the fight or organizing a post-war
resistance was effectively impossible. And Washington had had enough.
That’s not the case in
Afghanistan, as long as the Biden administration sees a threat from Al Qaeda or
ISIS. Their fate will largely be up to the Taliban. But the “forever war”
may not be over very soon, no matter what happens in Kabul in the next 30 days.
