Chalmers Johnson, author of "Blowback, Sorrows of Empire" and "Nemesis: The Last Days of the American Republic" , talked about the similarities in the decline of the Roman and Soviet empires and the signs that the U.S. empire is exhibiting the same symptoms: 1. perpetual warfare; 2. loss of confidence in the government/corruption/propaganda ; 3. destruction of civil liberties; 4. bankruptcy 5. inability to reform.
This interview is almost 10 years old so parts of it are irrelevant and some areas Johnson was flat out wrong, but where he is correct, he is immensely correct, e.g. secrecy in government and militarism. Johnson died in 2010.
I feel the best part of the interview is when Johnson discusses the Roman Empire in the first 24 minutes of the interview. Chalmers Johnson was president of the Japan Policy Research Institute, a non-profit research and public affairs organization devoted to public education concerning Japan and international relations in the Pacific.
