The Syrian government and U.S. supported Kurdish forces are racing to seize Syria's richest oil region and currently Assad is losing the race on the eastern side of the Euphrates. On the map above the region in question lies along the Euphrates River.
As part of the deal with ISIS, ISIS did not destroy the oil infrastructure in the region but instead handed the infrastructure over to the Kurds. ISIS fighters also joined Kurdish forces.
