Interesting article about
the Mandela Effect. I don't see a big difference between stuff and possessions,
other than being surprised to see what I consider to be a borderline slang term
in the KJV (the English language may have changed over the centuries). In cases
like this, there are numerous considerations: which sounds more natural, which
preserves the original author's "voice," whether the use of one term
would hurt the Scripture's reputation, etc.
As to bottles vs. skins:
it's frequently but not always better to substitute a more-familiar term. For
instance, 1 Peter 1:22 commands us to "love one another with a pure
heart," but in other cultures, the seat of emotions may not be the
blood-pumping organ, but the stomach or the liver. So in these cultures, Peter
would command readers to "love one another with a pure liver."
However, in other cases,
it may be better to preserve the literal meaning, but explain it. For instance,
most educated translators would not consider it apropriate for John to say of
Jesus in John 1:29, "Behold! The Chicken of God," simply because the
culture sacrifices chickens. In these translations, it would be better to
include a picture of a lamb and an explanation that lambs, like chickens, are
used for sacrifices. In the case of wine bottle vs. skins, I would lean towards
skins (perhaps in part because that's what I heard growing up). Old glass
bottles can still withstand the pressure of fermenting beverages, unlike old,
brittle skins that would burst. And the concept of a wineskin isn't that
difficult to explain to an outsider. So I think it would make more sense to use
wineskin in this case.

I keep up with your
blog and am generally aware of many of the themes/stories you follow. In my
limited understanding, the Mandela Effect is more related to confabulation and
the limitations of human memory. The either/or nature of the Mandela effect is
often and only related to events that can be in the collective consciousness,
and it is deeply connected not to linguistic differences but simply syntax or
spelling differences. In short, the Mandela Effect is pseudoscience. I’d
suggest further research on this and coming to your own conclusions.
That said, CERN is a
strange place still. The shiva statue there is really suggestive, nobody really
knows what they are doing there, and its hard to imagine a science program of
that magnitude not being in someone’s security interest in some way. (I’m
guessing the UN funds, which is more bad news.) It’s a place worthy of some
digging around to be sure. I would love to find a credible source on what is
happening at this place, haven’t found one as of yet.
Despite CERN/Mandela
Effect, I think there is a very real thing happening with our language and
memory currently. We are finding out how malleable the word can be, especially
with the manipulation of screens, addition of words into dictionaries, etc. If
Babel taught us anything, we should remember the importance of language as a
key element of God’s plan. The gift of tongues reminds us that God is not bound
to specific linguistic barriers, he is after all, God. So I think you’re right
to pick up on stuff like this when it comes forward.
